Our Story
Melanie, a 24-year-old hairdresser, founded Virtue Salon in 2010. She couldn't find a salon that felt right for her, so she decided to open her own. Traditional salons didn't appeal to her, but she was inspired by her great-grandfather's barber chair in her dad's garage. That chair became the inspiration for Virtue Salon.
“I have always loved the way old furniture and knick-knacks felt: their quality, nostalgia, and history. In my soul I wanted to be in an environment that was original, vibrant, creative, innovative, and evolving. I also have always valued things like recycling, composting, and reducing waste so it was natural that this would be a pillar of Virtue Salon.”
Melanie decided to make her salon vegan after starting a vegan diet for health reasons in her twenties. She saw positive changes and soon noticed the word "vegan" appearing in unexpected places, like hair products. She realized that there was a need for a salon that prioritized vegan and eco-friendly values.
Over the years, Virtue slowly grew until we had a team of 12 and needed a bigger space. In 2015, we moved across the street to our current location in Clintonville. This allowed the salon to expand and now we have a team of 35+ with a second location in the Brewery District of Columbus. We are proud to be a well-known part of the community, offering education to other salons and hairdressers, hosting food trucks and small business events, and having a close-knit team that travels together and cares deeply for one another.
We are incredibly lucky to have not just one, but two creative, vibrant spaces filled with inspiring and motivated people that spur each other on. We really couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful thing to have happened with Virtue Salon. We plan to continue to grow very slowly so that we can maintain the beauty, strength and quality of what we have cultivated as a team.
